Translated as ‘paper lantern ghost‘ (提灯お化け) Chōchin-obake are Japanese yōkai and common folklore characters dating back to 1784. They have appeared in everything from children’s toys, to books, to haunted houses. Among the pantheon of spooks and spirits, paper lantern ghosts mostly just hang around all evening being spooky, and are among the more harmless spirits.
